Assessor and Tax Collector Clerk

This position is for a Municipal client of ours. This position provides office administration and clerical support to the Assessor and Tax Collector. This position is responsible for clerical duties, answering the phones and assisting the public with inquiries for both departments. The Assessor/Tax Collector Clerk will be required to work effectively with other employees and the general public regularly on a direct and indirect basis. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to interact courteously and effectively with fellow employees and the public is essential. Familiarity with the concepts of real estate and personal property valuation is desirable as well as the ability to explain tax collection procedures. Good computer and phone skills are essential.

  • Helps update property transfers with documents received from land record information
  • Records exemption updates and enters into the computer
  • Accepts applications and information from residents for various tax relief programs
  • Assists with personal property declarations calculations and is required to maintain strict confidentiality of this information
  • Prices motor vehicles for the Grand List and Supplemental Lists
  • Assists the Assessor in gathering data used to compile the Grand List.
  • Works full time hours in the absence of the Assessor and Assistant Tax Collector
  • Coordinates mailings all tax bills
  • Daily collects and posts tax receipts using the Quality Data Service system. Balances receipts, prepares deposits and maintain files of relevant materials
  • Processes all Certificate of Certification from the Assessor’s Office and re-bills/refunds taxpayers as necessary
  • Investigates tax delinquencies and helps the Tax Collector coordinate legal procedures for collection. Meets and confers with tardy taxpayers to arrange payment plans.
  • Prepares delinquent statements on a regular basis and coordinates mailings of the same
  • Works with the Tax Collector to coordinate the billing and receipt of real estate tax payments by banks and mortgage companies to resolve problems of non-payment or overpayment of accounts.
  • Help to evaluate current collection practices and data processing applications and proposes procedural or administrative change as warranted.
  • Assists in the developing all categories of tax records that support the Grand List.

Educational Requirements

A High School Diploma or its equivalent and three (3) years of related job experience
